IT'S A LOT. TAKE ONE
Are you competitive?
Or.
Do you compete?
What’s the difference?
A lot.
As I sat and watched my daughter’s incredibly talented volleyball team play an incredibly AVERAGE few games of volleyball today I was getting more and more frustrated. I wondered did they come to win???
Of course they came to win, because everyone actually comes to win. The real question was did they come to compete? That answer was abundantly clear. No
It’s interesting.. I’ve always wanted to say I was competitive but really, I’m not in the same way that others claim their competitive nature. I’m the younger of 4 children and grew up accustomed to being told what to do, and I am used to executing what needs to been done. And well. But, I’m not the standard definition of competitive, yet I show up to COMPETE.
How is that different?? Competing is showing up every time to be the absolutely most perfect version of you in that place, very aware and accountable to your personal ‘flaw factor’. Knowing maybe it’s not perfect, but every drop of sweat that possibly can fall, better fall. AND if it wasn’t a win that can be recorded in the the stats of life, you better damn well have have taken notes… talked to yourself .. hard, AND made adjustments that accounted for your errors. Which means self correcting at every place possible, you out work YOUR last time, and only YOU can know what that pay out looks like, mentally, physically spiritually … soul grinding checks and balances. To be better the next time. To make sure that time is not wasted, the effort was not futile, the investment shows a return. You are competing.
Everyone steps on the court to win. And people are quick to tell you how competitive they are, but who is willing to check themselves in hard and often and compete? The winners do and will.
Average can be competitive, but it does NOT compete.
It's a lot!
